WHEN LUBA LEAVES HOME, STORIES (Algonquin Books), interconnected short stories based on Irene's Ukrainian neighborhood in Chicago. One of the stories, "Obligation" won the PEN Syndicated Fiction Award, and read on National Public Radio’s “The Sound of Writing."


OTHER PUBLICATIONS:  Irene's work appears in numerous journals, newspapers, anthologies and college textbooks including The New York Times Book Review, The Orlando Sentinel, and The Chicago Tribune Magazine. She is currently completing another novel.




Irene holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Vermont College.  She has taught online fiction and creative non-fiction classes for Gotham Writers’ Workshops, and leads writing workshops and seminars throughout the world.

One of her earliest jobs was doubling as a disc jockey for a Country and Western station and news announcer for an "Easy Listening" station at the same time.
